Celebrate Minnesota’s climate leaders with the U of M during the Great Northern Festival’s “Climate Solutions Series” this weekend

Curious about climate? Join the University of Minnesota Climate Adaptation Partnership (MCAP) for a weekend’s worth of engaging climate science for all ages. On January 28 and 29, MCAP, led by Dr. Heidi Roop, will present several events as part of the Great Northern Festival’s “Climate Solutions Series.”
Visit the Bell Museum on Saturday and swing by the American Swedish Institute on Sunday to learn how you can be a climate champion for our state and the world!
Saturday, January 28, 10 a.m.–2 p.m. | “Spotlight Science: Climate Solutions” | The Bell Museum
Connect with climate researchers and extension educators, check out hands-on demonstrations, explore the Snow exhibit, and learn how you can contribute to climate solutions. MCAP members will be on hand to chat climate with the public and answer a blizzard of questions! As an added bonus, visitors to the Bell can take in the new exhibit, “Snow: Tiny Crystals, Global Impact” and a special planetarium show, “Atlas of a Changing Earth,” a stunning film visualizing the processes affecting our warming planet. Entry fee included with Bell Museum admission.

A special evening event to honor climate leaders from across Minnesota who are working to ensure our state is making needed progress in responding to and preparing for a changing climate. Presented annually since 2014, the MCAP Awards celebrate exceptional achievements in leadership, education, research, policies, and practices that strengthen our resilience to climate change and advance climate justice. This year’s event will feature speakers Jothsna Harris, Dr. Mark Seeley, and Dr. Heidi Roop. Keynote speaker, Jothsna Harris, has a decade of experience building capacity for the climate justice movement, designing award-winning climate change programs rooted in community. Five awards were announced during the event: Michael Chaney, Climate Justice Award; Change Narrative LLC, Climate Communication Award; Resilience & Adaptation Action Team, Collaborative Adaptation Award; Comfort Lake-Forest Watershed District, Organization Adaptation Award; and Mindy Granley, Individual Adaptation Award. Sunday, January 29, 12:30 p.m. | Sneak Preview Book Release: Dr. Heidi Roop’s “The Climate Action Handbook: A Visual Guide to 100 Climate Solutions for Everyone” | American Swedish Institute
In this sneak preview of her forthcoming book, Dr. Heidi Roop, UMN climate scientist and director of the University of Minnesota Climate Adaptation Partnership, provides readers with a multitude of ways to be climate leaders in their communities. The Handbook, published by Sasquatch Books, will be available on March 21 and outlines in a highly visual fashion the issues facing the planet and offers 100 important actions that readers can take right now in their daily lives to help prepare for and slow the adverse effects of climate change.
