Cultivating support for students to address world hunger
As a student, Brian Steffenson’s interest in plant pathology was piqued by former University of Minnesota professor and 1970 Nobel Peace Prize-winner Norman Borlaug. Working with Borlaug and being inspired by his work breeding high-yield, disease-resistant wheats motivated Steffenson, now the Lieberman-Okinow Endowed Chair of Cereal Disease Resistance, to come up with a way to pay tribute to the man widely regarded as the architect of the Green Revolution.
Inspired by the financial aid that he received as a U of M student, Steffenson established the Norman E. Borlaug Fellowship for International Agriculture to encourage young scientists to continue Borlaug’s efforts in agriculture and humanitarian causes.
